HOLLAND - The Kalamazoo College women's tennis team competed at the MIAA Flighted Tournament hosted by Hope College Sept. 27-28, 2013.
Sarah Woods was the top seed in the A Singles and advanced to the semifinals before falling 6-3, 6-1 to Nancy Benda of Hope.
Woods defeated Kaylee Sexton (Saint Mary's) 6-1, 6-1 in the round of 16 while also defeating Anna Garcia (Hope) 6-0, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.
Jenna Riehl and Sabrina Dass also competed in A Singles. Riehl won her opening round match 6-2, 6-3 over Jacqueline Kjolhede of Saint Mary's before falling to Marissa Cloutier (Albion) 6-2, 6-2 in the round of 16. Dass lost her opening round match 6-1, 6-2 to Kelsi Black of Adrian.
Dass rolled through the back draw, however, winning three straight matches including the finals. Dass defeated Hannah Nichols (Saint Mary's) 7-5, 6-3, Megan Solano (Alma) 2-6, 6-3, 10-7, and Arielle Williams (Adrian) 6-4, 6-2 in the finals.
Carrie Foura, Anna Latala, and Siani Johnson competed in B Singles, but all three lost their first match. Foura fell 6-0, 6-4 to Marie Holaway of Hope. Latala lost 7-5, 2-6, 10-5 to Kate Mader (Hope). Johnson lost 6-1, 6-2 to Erin Kwaske (Trine).
The three Hornets were very successful in the back draw, eventually bowing out in matches against each other.
Latala and Johnson were victorius in quarterfinal matches before facing each other in the semifinals, a match that Latala won 6-0, 4-6, 10-7. Foura won three matches to get to the finals where she fell to Latala 8-4.
Eloise Germic, Sally Harrison, Katie Clark, and Elizabeth Tyburski competed in C Singles.
Germic won her first two matches in straight sets and won her semifinal match 7-5, 7-6(4) over Justine Hanson of Adrian before falling 6-4, 7-6(11) in the finals to Andrea Fetters of Saint Mary's.
Clark advanced to the semifinals where she lost to Fetters 6-1, 6-0. Harrison and Tyburski each won one match before falling in the quarterfinals.
In A Doubles play, Woods and Riehl were seeded No. 2 and advanced to the finals where they were defeated 8-4 by Benda/Capestany (Hope).
Latala and Doss won two matches before falling to Woods/Riehl 8-4 in the semifinals. Johnson and Foura lost 8-6 in the opening round and were defeated 8-5 in the back draw.
In B Doubles, Clark/Tyburski won two matches before falling 8-1 to Courts/Huffman (Hope) in the semifinals. Harrison/Germic lost their opening match. The pair was victorious in the quarterfinals of the back draw before falling 8-2 in the semifinals.
