Kalamazoo College's Sarah Woods was named Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) women's tennis Player of the Week on Monday for matches through March 7.
Woods, a senior from Oconomowoc, Wis., currently ranked No. 19 nationally and No. 5 in the region defeated another regionally-ranked player at No. 1 singles last week. After dropping the first set 7-5 against Denison's Lauren Hawley, Woods came back to take set two at 7-5 and force a deciding set against the No. 23 player in the region. Woods claimed a point for Kalamazoo with a 10-7 victory in the third.
The victory is the second over another top regional player this season for Woods. She stands 6-2 overall at No. 1 singles and 5-3 at No. 1 doubles this year.
On the doubles court Woods and partner Sabrina Dass fell at No.1 doubles to Hawley and Meg Chiumento of Denison 8-3. Chiumento ranks No. 50 nationally in singles.
The Kalamazoo College women's tennis team returns to action with the MIAA opener against Olivet at home on March 16.
