Volleyball falls to No. 1 Calvin

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College volleyball team hosted the top-ranked Calvin College Knights Tuesday, Oct. 1. The Hornets fell to Calvin in straight sets by scores of 25-13, 25-21, 25-18. 

After falling 25-13 in the first set, K showed its fight winning seven of the first ten points in set two. The Hornets would hold their lead until the Knights tied the set at 15. Laura Hop continued her service run for Calvin as the Knights took a 19-15 advantage. 

Kalamazoo got to within a single point at 22-21, but a K service error and two kills from Calvin's Maggie Kamp sealed the second set for the Knights. Calvin won set three 25-18 to clinch the match.

"Sets two and three showed us we can play with the top teams in the country," Kalamazoo Head Coach Jeanne Hess said. "We came to play."

Freshman outside hitter Kaela Van Til led the Hornets offensively with 12 kills. Junior setter Alex Gothard dished out 27 assists. Freshman libero Logan Horejsi dug up 11 balls.

Calvin was led by Maggie Kamp with 17 kills. Setter Megan Rietema dished out 37 assists while Kristi Zietse recorded 17 digs.

As a team, Kalamazoo hit a .206 clip compared to .366 for Calvin. Both teams recorded a single block for the entire match. 

Kalamazoo falls to 8-9 on the season and 4-4 in the MIAA. The Hornets return to action Friday, Oct. 4, when they travel to South Bend, Ind., for a match with the Belles of Saint Mary's College.
