Katrantzi named MIAA Volleyball Player of the Week

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Maria Katrantzi has been named MIAA Volleyball Player of the Week following her impressive performances which helped propel the Hornets to two conference victories this week.

Kalamazoo opened the week with a three set victory at Olivet to claim its first conference victory of the season as Katrantzi led the offense with 14 kills and chipped in 12 digs defensively in what would be the first of three double-doubles for her this week.

Katrantzi continued her well rounded play as she had 15 kills, 19 digs, and one service ace as the Hornets pulled off a dramatic five set victory on the road against Adrian. While K could not run its winning streak to three games as the team fell in four sets to Saint Mary's in their third game of the week, Katrantzi continued to play at a high level as she recorded 16 kills, 14 digs, and three service aces.

On the season, Katrantzi, a sophomore for Iearapetra, Crete, Greece, has been vital to both the offense and defense for K. She leads the team with 165 kills and is second in both service aces and digs.

Coach Jeanne Hess said, "I am thrilled for Maria as she absolutely deserves this honor. As a six position player, she is asked to contribute in all parts of the game. She has had to commit to working on both the offensive and defensive aspects of her game and I think this week with the three double-doubles was a great example of that work coming to fruition. Maria is a great competitor and she was certainly an important factor in our victories this week."

Katrantzi is being honored as player of the week for the first time in her career.

The Hornets will return to the court on Wednesday as they travel to Alma for a 7 p.m. match.
