Annemarie Bates joined the Kalamazoo College coaching staff in 2013.
A native of Portage, Mich., Bates lettered three years in volleyball at Portage Northern High School under head coach Jack Magelssen and was a member of the class of 1991. She went on to play four years of NCAA Division I volleyball at the University of Pittsburgh.
While at Pittsburgh, Bates became the head volleyball coach at Fox Chapel High School and also coached with Pittsburgh Nike Elite Volleyball Club.
Bates graduated from Pittsburgh in 1996 with a degree in general studies concentrated in sociology and history. After graduation, she returned to Portage to coach volleyball as the jayvee head coach and varsity assistant at her alma mater.
After one year at Portage, Bates accepted a position as assistant volleyball coach at Eastern Kentucky University.
In 2000, Bates moved to Kalamazoo after being named assistant volleyball coach at Western Michigan University. In 2002, Bates left the coaching profession and now works in WMU's academic services department.
Bates resides in Portage with her husband, Clayton, an assistant coach with the WMU men's basketball program. The couple has two girls, Annelyse, 9, and Sydney, 6.
In her spare time, Bates enjoys spending time with her family, going to Lake Michigan, attending various sporting events, and cooking.
