Game Recap

"Late game heroics lift men's soccer on Homecoming"

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College men's soccer team saved their best effort for the waning minutes of Saturday's homecoming match against Alma College as they defeated the Scots, 2-1, on a game-winning goal from Cal Kirchen with 27 seconds remaining.

Kirchen's goal was his 14th of the season and his fifth game-winning goal this season. Kyle Hernandez assisted on the goal, serving in a free kick from 30 yards out on the right side of the field.

Prior to taking the lead, Hernandez leveled the scoring in the 83rd minute off another set piece from the left side of the field. Serving in a ball from 45 yards out, Hernandez's free kick froze the Alma keeper on his line and the ball trickled into the bottom right corner.

Alma struck first in the match off a long throw-in in the 5th minute.

With the win, Kalamazoo improves to 11-4-1 overall and 10-2 in the MIAA. The Hornets have secured a home match in the MIAA tournament and will welcome Calvin College to MacKenzie Field this Wednesday for the second to last regular season game. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
