Catching Up With Our Competing Sports

Baseball
Kalamazoo continued MIAA play with a mid-week home game against Hope on Apr. 16 before playing a three-game series against Trine on Apr. 19 and 21. The Hornets fell to the Flying Dutchmen 14-0 in seven innings before sweeping the Thunder 15-2 in seven innings, 2-1, and 9-5. Ryar Rinehart led the offense with a .643 average (9-14) with a triple, three home runs, five runs scored, and six RBI. All three home runs came in the Friday game against Trine, tying a single-game record. David Stechow, Robert Newland, and Lukas Bolton all hit .364 on the week, with Bolton hitting a double and a triple for four RBI, Newland hitting two doubles, and Stechow stealing five bases. Robert Ahlgren (one run) and Jacob Davis (two runs) went seven innings in their starts, and then Brenden Oprinski and Owen Schihl collected saves. The Hornets will continue the season with a non-conference road mid-week game at Wheaton on Wednesday (Apr. 24) before playing Olivet in a four-game series with a home doubleheader on Saturday (Apr. 27) and a road doubleheader on Sunday (Apr. 28).

Men's Golf
The Hornets began the spring season by hosting the Steven Tyler Memorial on Apr. 15 before competing in the two-day Yellow Jacket Invitational on Apr. 19-20. Kalamazoo finished fifth with a team score of 329 at the home event and won the two-day event with a 637. Tyler Omness finished in a tie for third with a 77 at the home event before winning the two-day event with a 154. Emiliano Alvarado Rescala finished in a tie for 10th with an 81 at the Steven Tyler Memorial and then shot a 158 at the Yellow Jacket Invitational. Kalamazoo will finish its short spring season at the MIAA Spring Finale on Friday and Saturday (Apr. 26-27) at the Legacy Golf Club.

Women's Golf
Kalamazoo continued the spring season on Apr. 15 by hosting the Steven Tyler Memorial and playing the rescheduled MIAA Jamboree #4 at Trine on Apr. 18. The Hornets finished third with a team score of 352 at the home event before taking ninth with a team score of 405 at the MIAA event. Sydney Pickell finished in a tie for 10th with an 87 at the home event. Savera Rajendra-Nicolucci and Marissa Kovac finished in a tie for 12th with an 88 at the Steven Tyler Memorial. Jillian Smith shot an 89 at the home event and an 85 at the MIAA Jamboree. The Hornets will finish their short spring season with the MIAA Spring Finale on Monday and Tuesday (Apr. 22-23) at the Gull Lake View West Golf Course.

Men's Lacrosse
The Hornets continued their MIAA season with a home game against Adrian on Apr. 17 and a road game at Hope on Apr. 20. Kalamazoo was defeated by the Bulldogs 17-8 and the Flying Dutchmen 11-6. Logan Gillis finished with six points on a goal and five assists, as Jake Asnis (3), Mitchel VanGalder (2), and Eli Routt (2) scored multiple times. Colby Skinner collected seven ground balls and six caused turnovers, while Jack Bungart picked up four ground balls and caused three turnovers. Sam Hughes was 21-41 in the faceoff circle with six ground balls. Eric Paternoster made 15 saves in the cage in 65 minutes. Kalamazoo will finish the regular season with an MIAA home game on Saturday (Apr. 27) against Trine. 


Women's Lacrosse
Kalamazoo continued MIAA play with a home game against Albion on Apr. 16 and a road game at Saint Mary's on Apr. 20. The Hornets fell to the Britons 18-8 before defeating the Belles 20-12. Hannah Heeren scored 11 goals and had an assist for 12 points last week, with 10 coming against Saint Mary's and tying a single-game record. Heeren also had 21 draw controls, eight ground balls, and three caused turnovers. Tessa Fuller had four goals and seven assists against the Belles, which ties a single-game points record while adding seven ground balls. Ella Spooner scored eight goals, Sophie Hartl had 12 draw controls and four ground balls, and Julia Kozal finished with four ground balls and four caused turnovers. Poppy Balkema had eight saves and six ground balls in 90 minutes of play, while Jordan Flink finished with three saves in 30 minutes. The Hornets will finish the regular season and conference play with a home game against Trine on Wednesday (Apr. 24) and a road game at Adrian on Saturday (Apr. 27).


Softball
The Hornets continued their season with three home doubleheaders against Olivet on Apr. 17, Aquinas on Apr. 18, and Hope on Apr. 20. Kalamazoo went 3-3 on the week with a sweep over the Comets (8-0 in 6 inn. and 10-3 wins), two losses to the Saints (7-2 and 11-10 in 8 inn.), and a split with the Flying Dutch (3-2 loss and 6-0 win). Jordan Wesaw hit .476 (10-21) with four doubles and eight RBI. Lizzy Rottenberk hit .450 (9-20) with eight stolen bases, seven runs scored, two RBI, and a triple. Rottenberk broke the single-season steals record and the career steals, at-bats, runs, and hits records this past week. Emma Newlove had six hits with three doubles, and both Newlove and Jaycee Rider hit .300 on the week. In three starts, Maddy Vrba was 1-1 with a 1.65 ERA, two complete games, a shutout, and 25 strikeouts in 17 innings. Against Olivet, Vrba broke the single-game strikeout record with 15. Kalamazoo will continue its season with three road doubleheaders at Albion on Thursday (Apr. 25), Alma on Saturday (Apr. 27), and Siena Heights on Sunday (Apr. 28).

Men's Tennis
Kalamazoo continued its season with three road matches at Olivet on Apr. 16, #4 Case Western Reserve on Apr. 19, and Hope on Apr. 20. The Hornets defeated the Comets 9-0 and Flying Dutchmen 5-4 but fell to the Spartans 9-0. Gabe Vidinas/Alex Fleming was 2-0 in MIAA doubles action with an 8-1 win over Olivet and an 8-5 win over Hope. Vidinas and Fleming were also 2-0 in their singles matches, with Vidinas winning 6-0, 6-0 and Fleming winning 6-0, 6-0 and 1-6, 6-0, 6-2. Adnan Alousi/Julian Bilbao won the doubles match over Hope 8-4, while Alousi also won his singles match 5-7, 6-3, 6-0 to help secure the one-point win over Hope. The Hornets will finish their regular season with two home matches against Trine on Tuesday (Apr. 23) and #14 UW-Whitewater on Sunday (Apr. 28).

Women's Tennis
The Hornets continued MIAA play with a single road match at #29 Hope on Apr. 20 and fell to the Flying Dutch 9-0. Kalamazoo will finish its regular season with a single home match against Trine on Saturday (Apr. 27).
