Baseball lands four on All-MIAA Second Team

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – Four members of the Kalamazoo College baseball team earned All-MIAA honors for their efforts during the 2014 regular season. Senior Marc Zughaib, junior Scott Devine, sophomore Dylan Pierce, and freshman Mitchell VanKoevering were named to the All-MIAA Second Team Wednesday, May 7.

"I am really proud of all four of these young men," Kalamazoo Head Coach Mike Ott said. "They have been an integral part of what we have accomplished this year. It is a true testament to our entire program and team for these four to be recognized."

Zughaib, a two-time captain, has started 39 games for Kalamazoo at second base. The Orchard Lake native batted a .343 clip during the regular season while also breaking the single-season record for HBPs (hit by pitch) with 13.

Devine is batting .366 thus far this season, good for second on the team. The Plymouth native also has a team-high four homeruns including the first-ever homerun on the new Woodworth Field. The blast came in K's 10-3 win over Hope. Devine also leads the team in stolen bases going 13-14 during the regular season.

Pierce brings the conference's second-lowest ERA (earned run average), 1.89, to the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Tournament. Pierce has thrown three complete games in eight starts on the mound and has a 3-2 record.

VanKoevering has played all 40 games at shortstop for Kalamazoo. The Lyons Township alumnus has a .343 batting average and has hit seven doubles and three triples during this his freshman season.

Kalamazoo finished its regular season with a 17-23 record overall and a 15-13 mark in conference play. The Hornets clinched an MIAA Tournament berth for the first time in school history and will play 6-time league champion Adrian tonight (Wednesday) at Nicolay Field in Adrian.
