Baseball Sweeps Opening Doubleheader Over Manchester

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Kalamazoo College baseball team opened the 2022 season with a doubleheader sweep of Manchester University at Bishop Chatard High School on Saturday. Kalamazoo hit eight home runs in the two seven-inning games. Spencer Baldwin and Max Gordon both tied the school record with two home runs in a game.

Game One

The Hornets scored two in the first on Spencer Baldwin's 2-run home run. Manchester evened the score in the bottom half. The Hornets pulled ahead 3-2 in the second and never trailed the rest of the way, scoring one more in the third, four in the fourth, one in the fifth, four in the sixth and four in the seventh.

Kalamazoo had 18 hits in the game while allowing nine to Manchester.

Doug Propson, Spencer Baldwin and Max Gordon each had three hits. Blake Bean had two hits with five RBIs and four runs scored. Baldwin drove in four runs, while Gordon drove in three. 

Baldwin, Bean and Gordon (2) each homered. Bean, Propson, Harrison Poeszat, Noah Hecht and Tanner Hawkins each had a double.

Four Hornet pitchers combined to strike out seven batters in the game.

Game Two

Kalamazoo trailed early after allowing three runs in the bottom of the first. The Hornets evened the score in the top of the third, only to fall behind by a run in the bottom half. Kalamazoo made it 4-4 in the top of the fifth before scoring eight runs in the top of the sixth, and adding a final run in the top of the seventh to secure the 13-5 win.

Spencer Baldwin had three hits including two home runs with three RBIs. Blake Bean had three hits including a double with two RBIs. Noah Hecht also had three hits with a double and an RBI. Lukas Bolton also homered in the game.

The Hornet pitchers again combined for seven strikeouts while walking only one.

Kalamazoo and Manchester are scheduled to square off with two more games at Bishop Chatard High School on Sunday beginning at noon.
