David Stechow of the Kalamazoo College baseball team was selected as the MIAA Baseball Player of the Week on Monday (Apr. 10). This is the first time in his career that the sophomore has collected player of the week honors.

Kalamazoo played four games this past week with a single game against Albion (Apr. 3), another single game at Trine (Apr. 7), and then a doubleheader against Trine (Apr. 8) to finish out the series. The Hornets defeated the Britons 13-6, and then were defeated by the Thunder 7-3 before sweeping the doubleheader over Trine 14-3 and 14-4 to take the series.

Stechow led the team at the plate with a .538 (7-13) batting average, a .611 on-base percentage, and a .692 slugging percentage. In addition to his seven hits, he walked twice, had two pitches hit him, and had a sacrifice fly. Two of his seven hits went for extra bases with two doubles while driving in 12 runs and scoring five times himself. Stechow had three games with four RBI, one against Albion and twice during the Trine doubleheader. In the field, he had 14 putouts, six assists, and a .909 fielding percentage at second base.

Stechow has appeared in 44 games at the plate and has a career slash line of .333/.496/.391. He has collected 29 hits with three doubles, a triple, 23 RBI, 24 runs scored, 17 walks, and 10 stolen bases. Stechow also appeared on the MIAA Academic Honor Roll last season.

The Hornets will have a busy week with a single game at Hope on Monday (Apr. 10), a doubleheader at Albion on Tuesday (Apr. 11), a single game at home against Hope on Wednesday (Apr. 12), a single game at home against Calvin on Friday (Apr. 14), and a doubleheader at Calvin on Saturday (Apr. 15).
