Baseball Wins Two at Albion to Sweep Series

ALBION, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College baseball team defeated Albion 18-8 and 10-3 on Saturday, completing the three-game sweep of the Britons to open the MIAA season. Kalamazoo was the home team in both games as they were moved due to weather and field conditions in Kalamazoo.

Game One

Kalamazoo scored 10 runs in the first three innings en route to an 18-8 win in eight innings.

After taking the 10-0 lead, Albion scored eight runs in the next two innings, six of which were unearned. Leading just 10-8, Kalamazoo scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the bottom of the eighth to end the game with the 10-run rule. 

Kalamazoo finished with 16 hits in the game, while Kalamazoo pitchers limited Albion to five hits.

Tanner Hawkins was 5-for-5 with two RBIs and four runs scored.

David Stechow was 4-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored.

Lukas Bolton had two hits, both doubles, an RBI and two runs scored.

Ryar Rinehart was credited with one hit, a grand slam in the fifth, and seven RBIs. 

Harrison Poeszat had adouble and three RBIs. Cooper Mills also drove in three runs.

Braden Mussat struck out seven in 4.1 innings in the start. Ben Van Nes, Brednen Oprinski and Reece Omodio pitched the final 3.2 innings. 

Game Two

Albion scored two runs in the top of the first before Kalamazoo scored a run in the bottom half and three in the second to take a 4-2 lead. The Britons made it 4-3 with a run in the third before Kalamazoo added two runs in each of the fourth, fifth and seventh innings. The game was called after eight innings due to darkness.

Kalamazoo finished with 14 hits in the game, while six Hornet pitchers held Albion to four hits.

Tanner Hawkins and Robert Newland were both 3-for-3 in the game with a double. Newland also drove in two runs. Hawkins scored twice.

David Stechow and Logan Lockhart both had two hits and two RBIs. Alex DiDio had a double.

Kalamazoo is scheduled to host Hope College in a single, 9-inning game, on Tuesday, April 2, at 4 p.m.
