Kearns, Sypniewski Named MIAA Players of the Week

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Greg Kearns and Jake Sypniewski of the Kalamazoo College football team were honored Monday as MIAA Players of the Week for their efforts in Kalamazoo's 3-0 season-opening win over Oberlin.

Kearns, a senior from Howell, Mich. (Howell HS), is collecting his fourth MIAA Special Teams Player of the Week recognition in his career. The kicker connected on his lone field-goal attempt with 14:05 remaining in the fourth quarter in what ended up resulting as the game-winning make. 

Kearns is now 22-of-29 on field-goal attempts in 31 games during his career which places him third on Kalamazoo's all-time list. He has also converted on 55-of-61 extra-point attempts. 

Sypniewski, a senior Grand Rapids, Mich. (Forest Hills Eastern HS), led the Hornet defense with three interceptions in the opener to earn MIAA Defensive Player of the Week honors. The defensive back added five tackles and one pass break up to his final line. 

Sypniewski now has six interceptions in his career which places him in a tie for sixth all-time at Kalamazoo. His 60 tackles a year ago were tied for the second-most on the team. 

Karns, Sypniewski, and the Hornets continue their season on Saturday, Sept. 16 at Greenville University (Ill.) at 2 p.m.
