Football Drops Home Opener to Lakeland

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College football team lost its home opener 28-7 Saturday afternoon at Angell Field.

Neither team was able to produce any points in the first half as the teams entered halftime tied 0-0.

Lakeland got on the board with a touchdown in the third quarter with 8:45 remaining. The Muskies scored again at 5:11 and 1:58 left in the third to lead 21-0.

Lakeland went up 28-0 early in the fourth quarter (12:29).

Kalamazoo got in the end zone with 1:56 left in the fourth when Bubba Wilson caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Cam Crothers, but that would do it for the scoring as the Hornets fell 28-7.

Lakeland accumulated 448 yards of total offense while the Hornets were held to 242 yards.

Niko Nickson was 12-of-22 passing for 135 yards. Cam Crothers threw for 51 yards while Brad Ekonen threw for 15 yards.

Jared Rushman rushed for 28 yards on 10 carries while CJ Foster had 11 yards on eight carries.

Bubba Wilson led the receivers with five catches for 53 yards including the touchdown. Raekwon Castelow caught three passes for 40 yards while Anthony Giovanni had two catches for 35 yards and Lance Taylor had two catches for 26 yards.

Taylor Jackson led the Kalamazoo defense with 11 total tackles including 1.5 for lost yardage. Alex Stockwell finished with nine tackles while Jake Osen, DeShawn Moore, and Noah Coplan each finished with eight. Osen had two tackles for loss and an interception.

Kalamazoo (1-2) is off next week before opening MIAA play at Adrian on Oct. 5.
