Men's Basketball comes up short in conference opener

The Kalamazoo College men's basketball team lost 67-64 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opener on Thursday in Angola, Ind.

Kalamazoo led for the first seven minutes of the game before Trine took its first lead of the half with 12:13 remaining. The Thunder would lead by as many as 12 points before taking a 38-31 lead into halftime.

Kalamazoo opened the second half with a 12-2 run to take a 43-40 lead with 14:10 left in the game. The Hornets led by as many as five points (49-44) with 9:50 remaining.

Trine followed up with a 9-2 run over the next three minutes to regain the lead (53-51). The Thunder extended the lead to six points (59-53) with 5:05 remaining. Kalamazoo cut the deficit to one (59-58) with 3:00 left, but could not get any closer as time expired.

Trine shot 45.5 percent overall while Kalamazoo was held to 36.5 percent. Kalamazoo held a 40-32 rebounding advantage, including 14-5 on the offensive end.

Eric Fishman led Kalamazoo with 19 points, three assists, and two steals. Mark Ghafari scored 15 points with two assists and two steals.

Aaron Schoenfeldt finished with eight points and seven rebounds while Adam Peters scored eight points with nine rebounds.

Kalamazoo returns home to face Olivet College on Saturday, Jan. 5 at 3 p.m.
