Hornets can't hang with Thunder

Josh Miller playing basketball

ANGOLA, IN - The Kalamazoo College men's basketball team lost 72-60 to Trine on the road Saturday afternoon. It was a much closer game than when the teams met earlier this year in Kalamazoo where the Hornets fell by 22 points. The Hornets are now 7-14 overall and 2-8 in conference play.

The Hornets played a very strong first half. They shot over 48 percent as a team and forced Trine into 38 percent shooting. Kalamazoo received strong first half play from Stephen Oliphant and Adam Peters, as they combined for 13 points and five rebounds before the break. Peters also added three first half rebounds. The Hornets only trailed 30-29 at the half.

In the second half the Hornets were outscored 42-31. While Kalamazoo's shooting didn't falter much, its defense did. The Hornets allowed the Thunder to shoot a ludicrous 76 percent from the floor in the second half. Mike Oravetz and Adam Dykema both had big second halves combining for 13 points, but it wasn't enough to keep up with The thunder as they seemingly couldn't miss in the second half.

The Hornets were without starting senior point guard Carl Ghafari so the lineup looked a little different than usual. Dykema and Oliphant tied for a team-high in points with nine each, while Josh Miller led the team in rebounds with five to go along with the team's only block.

Kalamazoo will look to end its current five-game losing streak Wednesday, Feb. 11 at home against Calvin.
