Men's Basketball defeats Monmouth in overtime

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Kalamazoo College men's basketball team defeated Monmouth College (IL) 81-80 Sunday at the Rhodes Christmas Tournament.

Adam Dykema scored the go-ahead basket with about 10 seconds left in overtime and Monmouth's final shot missed as time expired.

Kalamazoo jumped out to an early lead and led by as many as 13 points in the first half before taking a 36-28 lead into halftime.

Kalamazoo increased its lead to 17 (46-29) early in the second half. The Hornets led by 17 again (63-46) with 6:54 to play, but the Fighting Scots outscored Kalamazoo 23-6 over the final six minutes to tie the game (69-69) and send it to overtime.

Each team had a lead in the overtime period and the Scots were up one when Jimmy Paprocki blocked a shot which led to Dykema's go-ahead jumper with about 10 seconds left on the clock. Monmouth had a chance to win but missed as time expired. 

Kalamazoo shot 53.4 percent overall while Monmouth shot 39.1 percent. The Scots sank 22-of-32 free throws compared to 8-of-12 for the Hornets. Kalamazoo held a 41-35 advantage in rebounds, although Monmouth had the edge (11-5) on the offensive end.

Dykema led all scorers with a career-high 28 points and eight rebounds on 10-of-14 shooting, including 6-of-9 from behind the arc.

Tommy Cerven scored 16 points and was one of four Hornets to foul out in the game.

Chase Baysdell fouled out with 13 points and 12 rebounds for his 11th career double-double.

Josh Whitney finished with 10 points, five rebounds and eight assists.

Kalamazoo returns home to face Lawrence Tech University on Wednesday, Dec. 21 at 7:30 p.m.
