Kalamazoo College golfers David Smith and Phil Ritchie were recognized with All-MIAA honors after the final MIAA Jamboree of the season on Tuesday. Smith earned All-MIAA First Team honors while Ritchie made the All-MIAA Second Team.

Smith, a sophomore from Highland, Mich. (Clarkston Everest Collegiate HS), earned first team honors for the second consecutive season. He tied for third in the league with a 74.63 average which is also the best in school history.

Ritchie, a sophomore from Novi, Mich. (Detroit Catholic Central HS), earned second team honors by ranking 12th in the league with a 76.38 average.

"What can you say about the play of David Smith and Phil Ritchie?" head coach Mitch Wilson said. "David capped another great fall season with his second straight All-MIAA First Team honor, improving his average by nearly two strokes. Phil came to us from the soccer team this year and stepped right in and had a great season, earning All-MIAA Second Team. They both will get even better with time and experience. With junior Agron Ziberi's continued solid play, we definitely have a solid nucleus returning for the spring and next fall. It will be fun!"

Kalamazoo finished fifth at Tuesday's jamboree.

"It was great to see our senior co-captain, Scott Manski, end his MIAA career with a solid round at Bedford," Wilson said. "We were missing our regular number five player due to academic commitments and another senior, Bob Schultz, playing in his first match of the year had an outstanding round. We have great senior leadership on our team."

The Kalamazoo College men's golf team matched last year's finish at fifth in the conference.

"I'm very proud of our team's finish in the league this fall," Wilson said. "Although we came in fifth for the second straight year, our average as a team improved by almost four shots. The MIAA is very competitive and we are seeing improvement across all of the top teams -- but we are ready to compete at that level."
