Catching Up with David Dwaihy '02

David Dwaihy playing soccer.

Personal
I graduated from Kalamazoo College in 2002 with a major in mathematics and a minor in English.

Current Residence
Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan

Current Occupation
I am a high school math teacher and soccer coach (boys and girls) at a small independent school in Grosse Pointe Woods called University Liggett School.

Favorite Soccer Memory
I have countless fond memories of my time playing soccer at K. Though we had some very successful seasons which included a number of memorable wins over tough opponents, I mostly think back on the less glamorous moments: (overly) competitive scrimmages during practice, goofing around with my teammates in the cafeteria, and all those beautiful fall evenings spent on old MacKenzie Field.

Competing at K
I completely enjoyed and appreciated the opportunity to play at K. I loved the fact that soccer was never made to feel like a job, and that my coach (Hardy Fuchs) valued me and my teammates as students and people. I also loved the fact that I was able to play alongside such a talented group of players, all of whom shared similar goals and values. I was really proud to be a part of those teams, and the opportunity to work together with my teammates to achieve a common goal and to prop one another up was great preparation for my career as a teacher, coach, husband, and father.

Other Experiences at K
In the latter years of my time at K, I was lucky enough to be a part of Monkapult (the improv troupe). That group, like the soccer team, became a family away from home, and pushed me well beyond the bounds of my comfort zone. The world-famous Jordan Klepper was a leader of the group at the time – learning from and becoming friends with people like Jordan and the other wildly talented members of that ensemble was a major highlight of my time at K. At a time in my life where I identified myself narrowly as a student and soccer player, that experience added a meaningful layer to both my sense of self and to my circle of friends.

Extra Time
From the moment I arrived at K, I felt an immediate sense of kinship with everyone I met. I made lifelong friends and had the good fortune to learn from a variety of amazing professors, all of whom had a clear passion for their subject area and a desire to connect with all of their students. I loved every minute of my time there, and wish I could go back and do it all over again.
