HOLLAND, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College men's soccer team won 2-1 at Hope in a non-conference matchup Saturday night. The Flying Dutchmen, now 5-2-1 overall, received votes in this week's Top 25 poll and were the preseason favorite to win the MIAA which begins conference play in a little over a week.
After a scoreless first half tonight, Emilio Romo scored the game's first goal in the 48th minute after a nice pass from Chad Ewing.
Romo scored again in the 61st minute, putting a shot over the keeper's head from outside the top of the box.
Hope made it a 2-1 game just two minutes later, but the Hornet defense held strong over the final 27 minutes to secure the win.
Hope held a 15-13 advantage in shots, however, Kalamazoo held a 5-3 edge in shots on goal.
Gavin Houtkooper made two saves in goal including one in the final three minutes to secure the win.
Kalamazoo (5-2-1) returns home to face Ohio Northern on Wednesday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m.
