Men's Swimming & Diving Sees Four Selections to CSC Academic All-District Team

The Kalamazoo College men's swimming and diving team had four student-athletes selected to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team, as announced on Tuesday (Apr. 2). Erik Danielson, Tim Karubas, Daniel Koselka, and Ben Pickrel were the representatives for the Hornets.

To be selected for the award, the student-athlete must be a starter or an important reserve with at least a 3.50 cumulative GPA, have played at least 90% or start in 66% of their team's competitions, and be at least a sophomore academically and athletically.

In the 2023-24 season, Danielson collected five first-place, one second-place, and seven third-place finishes in the eight regular-season competitions. He also finished fourth in the 400 Free Relay, fifth in the 200 Medley Relay, fifth in the 400 Medley Relay, sixth in the 200 Free Relay, sixth in the 100 Breast, and sixth in the 200 Breast at the MIAA Championships. Danielson primarily swims in the breaststroke and individual medley races and currently has personal bests in the 50 Free (23.77), 100 Free (51.70), 50 Breast (27.39), 100 Breast (57.96), 200 Breast (2:08.58), and 200 IM (2:01.90) at Kalamazoo. Danielson is double majoring in computer science and mathematics with a 4.00 cumulative GPA. This is his second time appearing on the all-district team, and he is an MIAA Academic Honor Roll member. 

Karubas collected six first-place, six second-place, and four third-place finishes in the eight regular-season competitions during 2023-24. At the MIAA Championships, he finished first in the 400 Free Relay, fourth in the 200 Free Relay, fifth in the 200 Medley Relay, and fifth in the 400 Medley Relay. Karubas primarily swims in the freestyle races and currently has personal bests in the 50 Free (21.62), 100 Free (47.92), 200 Free (1:46.22), 50 Back (29.14), 100 Back (1:01.55), 50 Breast (30.81), and 100 Breast (1:05.44) at Kalamazoo. Karubas is double majoring in economics and computer science with a 3.54 cumulative GPA. This is his first time appearing on the all-district team, and he is an MIAA Academic Honor Roll member. 

In the 2023-24 season, Koselka collected nine first-place, five second-place, and two third-place finishes in the eight regular-season competitions. He also finished first in the 400 Free Relay, fourth in the 200 Free Relay, fifth in the 800 Free Relay, and seventh in the 400 Medley Relay at the MIAA Championships. Koselka primarily swims in the freestyle races and currently has personal bests in the 50 Free (21.72), 100 Free (48.01), 200 Free (1:46.06), 500 Free (5:16.68), 50 Back (29.52), 100 Back (1:02.09), 50 Breast (27.39), 100 Breast (59.28), 50 Fly (24.48), 100 Fly (55.05), and 200 IM (2:12.04) at Kalamazoo. Koselka is double majoring in political science and history with a 3.68 cumulative GPA. This is his first time appearing on the all-district team, and he is a two-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll member. 

Pickrel collected 10 first-place, six second-place, and three third-place finishes in the eight regular-season competitions during 2023-24. He was also first in the 400 Free Relay, third in the 200 Back, fourth in the 100 Back, fifth in the 800 Free Relay, fifth in the 200 Medley Relay, fifth in the 400 Medley Relay, and seventh in the 200 IM at the MIAA Championships. Pickrel primarily swims in the butterfly, backstroke, and individual medley races and currently has personal bests in the 50 Free (23.88), 100 Free (51.64), 200 Free (1:47.32), 500 Free (5:04.80), 50 Back (23.81), 100 Back (50.54), 200 Back (1:51.33), 200 Fly (1:55.21), 200 IM (1:55.32), and 400 IM (4:08.20) at Kalamazoo. Pickrel is double majoring in business and political science with a 3.59 cumulative GPA. This is his second time appearing on the all-district team, and he is a two-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll member. 

Now that the four student-athletes have made the all-district team, they will move on to the CSC Academic All-American ballot, which will be announced in April.
