The 2020 Kalamazoo College men's tennis season came to an abrupt and unexpected end on Friday, March 13 when the MIAA President's Council canceled the spring seasons due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Kalamazoo finished the abbreviated season with a 4-2 record overall and ranked No. 26 in the Oracle/ITA Division III Men's National Team Rankings.
The highlight win of the season for the Hornets was a 5-4 victory over No. 27 Denison on the Big Red's home courts.
"Of course we are disappointed that our season ended abruptly, but we accomplished quite a bit finishing with a 4-2 record," said coach Mark Riley. "Led by our senior co-captains, Daniel Henry and Zack Ray and three first-year players, we finished the season with a #26 national ranking."
As a team, Kalamazoo finished the season with a 27-18 singles record and won 13 of its 22 doubles matches.
The three first-year players, Jai Banerji, Gabe Vidinas, and Peter Fitzgerald, combined for a 9-3 singles record at a mix of four, five, and six singles.
Ian Yi tallied three wins at No. 1 singles while Daniel Henry won four times at two singles. The two paired to form the one doubles team for the Hornets and finished with a 5-3 record.
Tytus Metzler ended the season with a 4-1 record at three singles with a 5-3 singles record overall. The junior also won five of seven doubles matches during the season including a 4-1 record with Fitzgerald.
Sophomore Casey Johnson, playing primarily at four singles, tied for the most singles wins on the team with five.
"The 2020-2021 season looks to be promising as we return six experienced players," added Riley. "This group will be led by Tytus Metzler and Ian Yi."
