Alex Fleming of the Kalamazoo College men's tennis team was named the SAAC Men's Hornet of the Week on Tuesday (May 7).
The Hornets hosted two matches in the MIAA Tournament on May 1 & 3 and defended its title by winning the semifinals over Hope 5-1 and the finals over Calvin 5-3.
In the semifinals against Hope, Fleming won the #1 doubles match with Gabe Vidinas 8-2 before winning the #3 singles match 6-0, 6-0. Then, he helped lead the Hornets to another MIAA Tournament Championship after he and Vidinas won their doubles match 8-1, and Fleming took his singles match 6-2, 6-2.
In his first collegiate tennis season, Fleming went 13-8 in singles play and 9-9 in doubles matches. He primarily played #1 doubles and #3 singles. Fleming was undefeated during conference play, going 7-0 in singles and doubles matches, which landed him on the All-MIAA First Team.
Kalamazoo advances to the NCAA DIII Tournament and will play Gustavus Adolphus on Friday (May 10) at 5:30 p.m., with UW-Whitewater hosting.
