Men's Cross Country Takes Fourth at MIAA Championships

HOLLAND, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College men's cross country team competed in the 2023 MIAA Championships on Saturday (Oct. 28) at the Three Fires Golf Club. The Hornets finished in the top half of the conference for the first time in 18 seasons, coming in fourth with 158 points.

Calvin won the event with 17 points, with Hope coming in second at 56 points and Trine finishing third with 50 points. Kalamazoo needed every point it could get, finishing with just one more point than Alma, who came in fifth with 159 points.

Rob Kloosterman continues to be the best runner for the Hornets after transferring from Aquinas, finishing 26th at 25:42. His previous personal-best time was 27:02 earlier this season, meaning he ran 1:20 faster today. Will Thomas also claimed a top-40 finish in 35th, with a time of 26:08. 

Patrick Dunfee and Garrick Hohm also ran the fastest 8k of their careers, as Dunfee finished in 58th and Hohm came in 77th. Dunfee's 26:53 was 1:14 faster than his previous best, and Hohm's 27:25 was 1:21 faster. 

Miles Buckley (27:46), Caleb Ewald (27:49), and Levi Thomas (27:49) rounded out the scoring for the Hornets. Ewald ran a personal best by 1:18, and Thomas beat his fastest time by 1:11.

Also running for the Hornets were Keegan Reynolds (28:22), Tobin Schiller (28:40), Bryce Soisson (29:01), and Gerardo Herrera-Sanchez (29:45). All four set new personal bests, with Reynolds running 49 seconds faster, Schiller 1:28 quicker, Soisson 1:25 faster, and Herrera-Shanchez 44 seconds quicker.

Kalamazoo will return to the course on Saturday (Nov. 11) at the NCAA DIII Great Lakes Regional.
