CLERMONT, Fla. - The Kalamazoo College softball team won its season opener 9-0 over Potsdam St. (SUNY-Potsdam) in Florida on Saturday.

Kalamazoo started the scoring in the second inning when Kennedy Boulton's single to second base took a funny bounce allowing Abby Anderson to score from second.

The Hornets added a run in the third on Erin DuRoss' single while Katie George scored on a throwing error.

Kalamazoo tacked on five runs in the fifth inning. DuRoss drove in a pair of runs with a single to right following two infield singles and a sacrifice bunt. Abby Anderson doubled down the right field line to bring in another run, and a single up the middle by Boulton gave Kalamazoo a 7-0 lead.

The Hornets scored two more runs in the seventh inning, one on an RBI single by Boulton and another when Megan Malish scored on a wild pitch.

Erin DuRoss earned the win on the mound in her first collegiate start, allowing seven hits in seven innings while setting a new school record with 14 strikeouts. She twice left runners stranded on third base and left two runners on base in the fifth.

DuRoss was also 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI.

Kennedy Boulton was 3-for-3 with three RBI. Abby Anderson was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored.

Kalamazoo lost its second game of the day 11-2 to Buffalo State.

Buffalo State led 1-0 after two innings before scoring seven runs in the third inning with the aid of three Kalamazoo errors. The Hornets made it an 8-2 game with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth, but the Bengals responded with three more runs in the bottom of the inning to take the 11-2 lead.

Kalamazoo had four hits in the game, singles by Katie George, Abby Anderson, Querubin Dubois and Kayla Dziadzio.

Kalamazoo (1-1) returns to action in Florida on Sunday with games against Oberlin and Colby.
