Softball wins big in lengthened day

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – After a lengthy delay Saturday afternoon, the Kalamazoo College softball team picked up an 11-3 five-inning win over North Park University.

The Hornets used their bottled up energy to break out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first courtesy of run producing hits from Hannah Pipkin, Megan Malish and Briana Huisken.

Adding two more runs in the bottom of the second, Kalamazoo looked more and more like it would end the game in an eight-run mercy after the Hornets tacked on three more in the bottom of the third.

Despite North Park's efforts to extend the game with a run in the third, fourth and fifth making the Kalamazoo lead 9-3 headed to the bottom of the fifth, the Hornets ended the game with an RBI single from Angelia Evangelista and an RBI single from Rachel Epstein.

Erin DuRoss led the way for the Hornets offensively going 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Evangelista and Nori Seita each added two hits for K while seven other players recorded a hit in the game.

Victoria Najacht was credited with the win for Kalamazoo after relieving DuRoss in the top of the fourth.

The two teams attempted to fit in the second game of the scheduled doubleheader but the game was suspended after three innings due to darkness. Kalamazoo led North Park, 6-3.

With the win, Kalamazoo recorded its third win of the season. Next up for the Hornets is a doubleheader with Cornerstone University on March 30.
