KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Kalamazoo College softball team competed against Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rival Hope College Wednesday afternoon. Despite playing the Dutch tough in both games of the doubleheader. Kalamazoo fell 2-0 in game one and 4-3 in game two.
Game One
Erin DuRoss tossed seven strong innings of work for Kalamazoo, but the Hornets were limited to just one hit with Hope's Sydney Jones on the rubber.
Hope scored one run in both the fourth and sixth innings and that's all the Dutch would need on their way to a game one victory.
DuRoss ended game one with eight strikeouts.
Game Two
After throwing 108 pitches in game one, DuRoss started again for Kalamazoo in game two looking to salvage a split in the doubleheader.
The Hornets fell behind 1-0 in the third, but DuRoss' bat tied the game up as she launched a solo home run down the left field line in the top of the sixth.
Hope countered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning, but Kalamazoo didn't go away easily.
With the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, DuRoss struck again driving in Megan Malish on an RBI single. Dana Page grounded out picking up an RBI and tying the game for Kalamazoo before heading to the bottom of the seventh.
Hope rallied, though, as they played small ball and ultimately ended the game on the third at bat of the bottom of the seventh.
DuRoss recorded a game-high three hits and threw 113 pitches in game two.
Page and Malish also recorded two hits apiece for K in the nightcap.
Kalamazoo resumes MIAA action this Saturday when they travel to Calvin College for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
