CHICAGO, Ill. - The Kalamazoo College softball team split a doubleheader at the University of Chicago on Sunday. Chicago won the opener 4-3 while Kalamazoo won the second game 9-5.
Game One
Chicago took a 2-0 lead with a home run in the bottom of the third inning.
The score remained 2-0 and the Hornets were held without a hit until the top of the seventh when Anna Majewski led off the inning with a single. Hayleigh Alamo reached on an error to put two runners on, and following a fielders choice Keelin McManus stepped up and hit a 3-run home run to left field to put Kalamazoo up 3-2.
Chicago led off the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run to tie it back up at 3-3. The Maroons followed with a single and sacrifice bunt before a double to right center drove home the winning run.
Game Two
Chicago led 3-1 after two innings before Kalamazoo scored three runs in the third highlighted by Keelin McManus' 2-run single giving the Hornets a 4-3 lead.
Kalamazoo added two in the fourth to go up 6-3, but Chicago battled back with a run in bottom of the fourth and another in the fifth to make it 6-5.
The Hornets added three in the sixth capped off by Sammi Luzadre's 2-run single making it 9-5.
Chicago loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth before Luzadre came in to pitch in relief and closed out the inning. Luzadre also pitched the seventh to earn the save while McManus earned the win.
Anna Majewski was 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Hayleigh Alamo, Keelin McManus, and Nikki Gorder each had two hits while Ashley Schiffer had a double.
Alamo, McManus, Luzadre, and Nina Szalkiewicz each drove in two runs.
Kalamazoo returns to conference play Tuesday with a doubleheader at Alma.
