Softball Splits Season-Opening Doubleheader at Franklin

FRANKLIN, Ind. - The Kalamazoo College softball team split its season-opening doubleheader at Franklin College on Saturday. Kalamazoo won the opener 2-1 before dropping the second game 7-5.

Game One

Kalamazoo got on the board in the top of the first on an RBI single by Sam Moss. Sammi Luzadre drove in a run in the fourth to give the Hornets a 2-0 lead.

Franklin scored a run in the bottom of the seventh and had runners on second and third with two outs when a fly out to centerfield ended the game.

Franklin had eight hits in the game compared to five by Kalamazoo.

Anna Majewski had two hits including a triple. Lucy Hart had a double while Sam Moss and Sammi Luzadre each had RBI singles.

Luzadre struck out two in the complete-game win on the mound.

Game Two

Kalamazoo led 4-0 after three innings, but a five-run fourth put the Grizzlies on top. Kalamazoo tied it at 5-5 in the top of the fifth before Franklin scored a run in the bottom half and another in the sixth to take the 7-5 lead. Kalamazoo put one runner on in the seventh.

Each team had eight hits in the game.

Sammi Luzadre had a double while Alyssa Heitkamp had a triple.

Luzadre, Heitkamp, Nina Szalkiewicz, and Sam Moss each drove in a run.

Kalamazoo is scheduled to play its home opener next Saturday, March 14 against Bluffton.
