Kalamazoo Splits with Olivet, Albion

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College softball team split a pair of games on Friday with a 13-0 win over Olivet in the afternoon and a 4-1 loss to Albion later that evening.  

Game 1

After a scoreless first two innings, the Hornets exploded for eight runs in the top of the third. Kalamazoo had five hits in the frame including a double out to left center by Lucy Hart that scored two runs and a single from Keelin McManus that brought in two more runners. 

Kalamazoo kept its hot streak going with three more runs in the fifth inning, helped along by a single to right field from Lizzy Rottenberk good for two RBIs and an RBI single from Sammi Luzadre. They capped off the win with two additional runs in the top of the fifth. 

Rottenberk and Luzadre tallied three RBIs each with two hits and one hit, respectively. McManus and Nikki Gorder had two hits each, and Nina Szalkiewicz recorded a game-high three hits and scored one run. 

Ten of Kalamazoo's players scored at least one run against the Comets. 

Sammi Luzadre threw a shutout over five innings, allowing just seven Olivet hits. She tallied four strikeouts.

Game 2

Albion took a 4-0 lead over two innings with three runs scored in the fourth and one in the fifth.  

The Hornets were held scoreless through five innings before getting one run on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Sam Moss singled to center field and scored Kelsey Diekman, on base from a double to right field as the first batter of the inning. 

Kalamazoo recorded six hits from six different players in game two. Moss had one hit and one RBI, and Diekman scored the team's sole run. Moss also pitched seven innings and threw four strikeouts. Nina Szalkiewicz had another hit to total a team-high four on the day.

The Hornets are next scheduled to host Saint Mary's and Adrian on Saturday, March 27. They will play Saint Mary's first and 12 p.m. and Adrian at 4 p.m. The two visiting teams will play against each other at 2 p.m.
