ANGOLA, Ind. - The Kalamazoo College softball team split a pair of games at the MIAA Tournament today, beating Saint Mary's 2-1 in the consolation bracket before falling to Alma 9-1 in the afternoon double-elimination game.

Game One

Kalamazoo took an early lead in the game when Nina Szalkiewicz hit a solo home run during the first inning.

Saint Mary's evened the score at 1-1 with a run in the second before the Hornets took back the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Sam Moss had a base hit out to center field and Lizzy Rottenberk came up with a single to score the runner. The 2-1 score would remain and Kalamazoo advanced to the second round of the consolation bracket.

Kalamazoo had seven hits in the contest while Saint Mary's had three. Nina Szalkiewicz was three-for-three at bat with her home run and two more base hits. Lucy Hart and Sammi Luzadre also had hits for the Hornets.

Sammi Luzadre pitched a complete game, allowing just one run and striking out two Saint Mary's batters.

Game Two

The Hornets were defeated in five innings by Alma for their second loss of the tournament and were sent home by double elimination.

Kalamazoo scored its lone run in the first frame when Keelin McManus singled to center field to score Lucy Hart, on base from a fielder's choice play by the Scots.

Alma scored two runs in the first and seven more over the next three innings to take the 9-1 win. The Scots had 12 hits to Kalamazoo's two from McManus and Kelsey Diekman

Keelin McManus pitched the first three innings for the Hornets and struck out three batters. Sammi Luzadre came in for one inning of relief, striking out two.

This concludes the 2021 season for the Hornets.
