Softball Splits Last Two Games In Florida

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Kalamazoo College softball team finished its spring break trip with two games against Tufts and Carleton on Thursday (Mar. 21). The Hornets fell to the undefeated Jumbos 8-0 in six innings, but turned around on defeated the Knights 10-0 in six innings. 

GAME 1 - Tufts 8, Kalamazoo 0

The Jumbos scored all eight runs in six innings, with two coming in the first, one in the second, two in the fourth, two in the fifth, and one in the sixth. The scoring plays were three singles, three doubles, and a wild pitch.

Jordan Cook (2-5) pitched all six innings and gave up eight runs on 13 hits and two walks. 

GAME 2 - Kalamazoo 10, Carleton 0

The Hornets turned it around in the second game by scoring 10 runs in six innings and blanking the Knights. In the second inning, two runs crossed the plate after the Hornets loaded the plate with singles by Amy McNutt, Julia Rambo, and Lizzy Rottenberk. Then, Lucy Hart brought two runners in with a double to left field. 

Another three runs were scored in the fourth inning, beginning with Rottenberk hitting a single with one out and Hart bringing her home on her fourth home run of the season to right-center field. Sam Moss and Brynna Garden got the inning going again with a couple of singles, then Emma Newlove brought in Moss on a double to left center field. 

The other five runs came in during the sixth inning as Garden, Bella Caza, and Newlove loaded the bases with two singles and a walk. McNutt walked to bring in Garden, and Rambo was hit by a pitch for the first two runs. An error by the Knights helped Kalamazoo score the third run. Finally, the last two runs crossed the plate after Moss was hit by a pitch, and Garden walked in her second at-bat of the inning. 

Moss (5-2) threw her second consecutive complete-game shutout, allowing just four hits and striking out three. 

There were seven Hornets who had multiple hits in the two games. Rottenberk (three hits and a walk), Garden (two hits and two walks), and Newlove (two hits and two walks) all reached base four times each. In addition, Hart had a double, a home run, four RBI, and a walk. Rottenberk also added two stolen bases.

Kalamazoo will head back north and have a doubleheader at Wheaton on Tuesday (Mar. 28) in Wheaton, Ill., beginning at 4 p.m.
