Softball Splits Doubleheader at Wheaton

WHEATON, Ill. - The Kalamazoo College softball team split a doubleheader at Wheaton College on Tuesday. Wheaton won the opener, 7-6. Kalamazoo won game two, 9-7.

Game One

Kalamazoo trailed 2-0 heading into the top of the fifth when the Hornets got on the board on an RBI single by Sam Moss. Wheaton pulled ahead 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth.

Kalamazoo scored four runs in the top of the sixth, capped off by Lucy Hart's 2-run double putting Kalamazoo up 5-3.

Wheaton responded with four runs in the bottom of the sixth, making it 7-5 heading into the seventh. Emma Newlove homered with two outs, but the Hornets were unable to push any more runs across in the loss.

Wheaton had 13 hits in the game compared to 11 by Kalamazoo. 

Lizzy Rottenberk, Emma Newlove and Mackenzie Moore each had two hits.

Lucy Hart had a double with two RBIs. Amy McNutt also had a double.

Game Two

Kalamazoo again was held scoreless over the first four innings as the Hornets trailed 1-0 heading into the fifth.

Mackenzie Moore's RBI single tied it at 1-1 in the fifth.

Kalamazoo put seven runs on the board in the sixth, highlighted by a pair of doubles, a 2-run single by Lizzy Rottenberk, and a pair of bases-loaded walks.

Wheaton scored three in the bottom of the sixth to make it an 8-4 game. Rottenberk's RBI double in the top of the seventh gave Kalamazoo a 9-4 advantage. Wheaton scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh and had a runner on second with one out before a strikeout and ground out ended the game in favor of the Hornets.

Kalamazoo had 14 hits in the game compared to 10 by Wheaton. Six of Kalamazoo's hits were doubles.

Lizzy Rottenberk was 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs. 

Lucy Hart had two hits including a double. Mackenzie Moore and Jaycee Rider each had two hits. Moore scored twice and had an RBI. Emma Newlove also doubled and drove in two runs.

Jordan Cook earned the win in the circle, striking out five in the complete game win.

Kalamazoo is scheduled to host Bluffton on Sunday, April 2 beginning at 2 p.m.
