Softball Sweeps Bluffton in Home Opener

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College softball team swept Bluffton University in the Hornets' home opener Sunday, 3-2 and 7-3.

Game One

Sam Moss put the Hornets ahead with a long home run to left centerfield in the bottom of the first inning. Bluffton tied it up in the top of the second before Moss put the Hornets ahead again with an RBI double in the bottom of the third. Bluffton scored again in the top of the sixth to tie it at 2-2, but Cecilia Schihl responded with an RBI double to left center in the bottom of the sixth to give the Hornets a 3-2 lead. Bluffton singled to start the seventh, but a pair of strikeouts and a ground out ended the game.

Moss finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run, double and two RBIs. Schihl's double drove in the only other run.

Moss also went the distance in the circle to improve to 6-3 on the season. She matched a career-high with nine strikeouts while walking one in seven innings.

Game Two

Kalamazoo jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first following an RBI single by Brynna Garden, a two-run double by Emma Newlove and an RBI single by Cecilia Schihl. Bluffton scored a run in the top of the second before Lucy Hart's RBI single in the bottom half put Kalamazoo up 5-1. Sam Moss hit her second home run of the day just fair down the left field line in the bottom of the fourth, giving Kalamazoo a 6-1 lead. Bluffton pushed two runs across in the fifth. Hart's RBI double in the sixth gave Kalamazoo a 7-3 advantage. One Bluffton player reached base in the seventh before the side was retired.

Lucy Hart was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs.

Sam Moss had two hits including a double and an RBI. Cecilia Schihl also had two hits with an RBI.

Lizzy Rottenberk and Emma Newlove each had a double.

Jordan Cook earned her fourth win of the season, allowing just two earned runs in seven innings.

Kalamazoo is scheduled to open MIAA play at home against Alma on Wednesday, April 5, at 3 p.m.
