Sam Moss of the Kalamazoo College softball team was named the SAAC Women's Hornet of the Week on Tuesday (Apr. 4).
The Hornets played two doubleheaders last week by facing Wheaton (Mar. 28) on the road and hosting Bluffton (Apr. 2) in their home opener. Kalamazoo split the two games with the Thunder by dropping game one 7-6 and taking game two 9-7, then sweeping the Beavers 3-2 and 7-3.
Moss was effective in the lineup and the circle in the four games last week. She paced the offense by going 7-16 (.438) with a .938 slugging percentage. Four of the seven hits went for extra bases with two doubles and two home runs. Moss also drove in four runs and scored three times herself. In addition, she had a stolen base and was perfect in the field with five putouts and seven assists. Moss had a 1-1 record in the circle in two starts and pitched 12.1 innings. She allowed nine runs (seven earned) for a 3.97 ERA and struck out 13 compared to one walk. On the season, Moss leads the team with a .393 batting average, a .448 on-base percentage, 24 hits, 16 RBI, and four stolen bases while being tied for the team lead with 13 runs scored and four home runs.
The senior has been selected as the MIAA Pitcher of the Week once in her career and is a two-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll member. Moss has appeared in 37 games with 31 starts as a pitcher for her career and has a 16-12 record with 18 complete games. In 191 innings, she has amassed 115 strikeouts and has a 3.55 ERA. In 87 games at the plate, Moss has a career slash line of .325/.390/.477 and has collected 90 hits, 14 doubles, two triples, eight home runs, 55 RBI, 54 runs scored, 26 walks, and 12 stolen bases.
Kalamazoo will open MIAA play with two home doubleheaders against Alma on Wednesday (Apr. 5) and Olivet on Friday (Apr. 7).
