Sam Moss of the Kalamazoo College softball team was selected as the MIAA Softball Player of the Week on Monday (Apr. 10). This is the first time in her career that the senior has collected player of the week honors.
The Hornets played their MIAA opener at home against Olivet (Apr. 7) after the Alma doubleheader was postponed. Kalamazoo convincingly swept the Comets, collecting 14-3 and 22-5 wins in five innings for both games.
In the two games at the plate, Moss went 5-7 (.714) with a .778 on-base percentage and a 1.143 slugging percentage. In addition to her five hits, Moss was also walked and hit by a pitch once each. Three of the five hits were doubles, which resulted in six RBI and four runs scored. Moss also pitched game one of the doubleheader, pitching a complete game and allowing three runs (zero earned) on six hits, two defensive errors, and a walk while striking out three. Additionally, she collected five assists and two putouts between her time in the circle and at shortstop during the second game.
The senior has also been selected as the MIAA Pitcher of the Week once in her career and is a two-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll member. Moss has appeared in 38 games with 32 starts as a pitcher for her career and has a 17-12 record with 19 complete games. In 196 innings, she has amassed 118 strikeouts and has a 3.46 ERA. In 89 games at the plate, Moss has a career slash line of .335/.401/.493 and has collected 95 hits, 17 doubles, two triples, eight home runs, 61 RBI, 58 runs scored, 27 walks, and 12 stolen bases.
Kalamazoo will play four doubleheaders this week at home against Alma on Monday (Apr. 10), on the road at Adrian on Tuesday (Apr. 11), at home against Manchester on Thursday (Apr. 13), and on the road at Saint Mary's on Saturday (Apr. 15).
