Softball Upsets #14 MIT, Falls to Colby

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Kalamazoo College softball team pulled off a 9-5 upset over #14 MIT at Legends Way on Wednesday. The Hornets then lost 9-5 to Colby on the last game of the team's spring trip.

Kalamazoo vs. #14 MIT

Kalamazoo jumped out to an 8-0 lead after two innings after scoring four runs in the first and second innings. The Hornets' runs were scored on five singles and two doubles. MIT responded with two runs in the third inning on a double and an error on the K defense. The Hornets got one of the runs back in the fifth on an RBI double, and the Engineering scored the last three runs of the game on a bases-clearing double in the sixth inning.

Emma Newlove led the offense by going 3-4 with two doubles, two runs scored, and three RBI. Brynna Garden also went 3-4 with two runs scored, an RBI, and a stolen base.

Mackenzie Moore had two hits, including a double, and drove in three runs. Landrie Fridsma and Jordan Wesaw also had multi-hit games, with Bella Caza and Wesaw collecting the other two RBI.

Jordan Cook (3-2) threw five and a third innings in the win, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits and two walks.

Jordan Wesaw came in to relieve Cook and allowed just one hit in one and two-thirds innings.

Kalamazoo vs. Colby

Kalamazoo scored in the top of the first but trailed 4-1 at the end of one. The Hornets scored a run in each of the next three innings to tie it at 4-4 after four. Colby pulled ahead with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Kalamazoo made it 8-5 with another run in the sixth. Colby scored again in the bottom half before holding Kalamazoo scoreless in the seventh.

Lizzy Rottenberk had two hits for Kalamazoo including a triple.

Landrie Fridsma, Emma Newlove, Brynna Garden and Jaycee Rider each drove in a run. Fridsma had a hit, walked three times and scored twice.
