Emma Newlove of the Kalamazoo College softball team was named the SAAC Women's Hornet of the Week on Tuesday (Apr. 2).
The Hornets continued their season with six more games in Florida this past week against #14 MIT (twice), Colby (twice), Gustavus Adolphus, and UW-Oshkosh. Kalamazoo split the two games with the Engineers by falling 20-4 in five innings the first time and gaining a 9-5 upset in the second game. K also earned a 5-2 win over the Gusties and then dropped the contests to the Mules (5-4 and 9-5) and Titans (17-2).
Newlove had a batting average of .350 in those six games, collecting seven hits, four doubles, seven RBI, four runs scored, and a walk. Her best game came against #14 MIT when she went 3-4 with two doubles, three RBI, and two runs scored. Newlove recorded a hit in four of the six games, two of them being multi-hit performances. She was moved into the clean up spot at the beginning of last week because of her power and run production.
In the first 12 games this season, Newlove is leading the Hornets with six doubles, a home run, seven extra base hits, and a .538 slugging percentage. In 39 at-bats, she has a .308 batting average, .357 on-base percentage, 12 hits, nine RBI, six runs scored, and three walks. Newlove came on late in her first year of college softball last season and in 42 career games, she has a .301 batting average, .358 on-base percentage, .512 slugging percentage, 37 hits, 14 doubles, four home runs, 25 RBI, 19 runs scored, 11 walks, and two stolen bases.
Kalamazoo will begin MIAA play with a home doubleheader against #1 Trine on Saturday (Apr. 6).
