Women's Basketball defeats Saint Mary's 70-67

KALAMAZOO - The Kalamazoo College women's basketball team improved to 4-1 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association with a 70-67 win over Saint Mary's College on Saturday. The win was the eighth in the last nine games for the Hornets.

Saint Mary's jumped out to an early lead and led most of the first half, but never by more than five points. The Hornets took their first lead of the game (32-31) with 2:17 left in the first half before taking a one point lead (35-34) into halftime.

Kalamazoo took a five point lead early in the second half, but Saint Mary's evened the score at 41-41 and then 43-43 with 13:51 remaining. Kalamazoo used a 12-2 run to take its largest lead of the game (55-45) with 9:21 left, but the visiting Belles responed with a 15-4 run of their own to make it a one point game again (60-59) with 3:13 on the clock. The Hornets withstood the late surge and held on for the 70-67 win.

Kalamazoo shot 45.8 percent overall while making 13-of-20 free throws. Saint Mary's shot 37.7 percent while going 14-for-19 at the line. Kalamazoo outrebounded Saint Mary's, 47-35. The Belles scored 19 points on a season-high 22 turnovers by Kalamazoo. The Hornets scored 15 points on 13 Saint Mary's turnovers.

Nicole Antoine led the Hornets with 21 points, eight rebounds, and four assists while sinking 9-of-9 free throws.

Emily Lindsay scored 15 points with three rebounds and three blocked shots. Perri (Weiderman) Nicholson scored 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting with two steals.

Morgan Overstreed added nine points with two steals.

Kalamazoo (8-5, 4-1 MIAA) returns to action at Hope College on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 7:30 p.m.
