Hornets fall on the road to No.10 Hope

Emily Kozal playing basketball.

HOLLAND, MI - The Kalamazoo College women's basketball team lost 73-64 to No. 10 Hope on Saturday night. Hope moves to 12-1 while the Hornets are now 9-5 overall and 4-2 in conference play.

The Hornets didn't seem intimidated at all despite the hostile environment and Hope's national ranking and reputation. Kalamazoo came right out in the first half and hung with them. While the Hornets never led, they kept the Flying Dutch within four to eight points for the majority of the first half. This was largely in part due to the tremendous shooting of both Hannah Maness and Grace Smith who were a combined 6/7 from the floor for 16 points. Hannah Maness was perfect from downtown in the first half-hitting all three of her attempts. Perri Nicholson was also a force to be reckoned with in the first half as she grabbed eight rebounds.

Kalamazoo didn't let up in the second half, outscoring Hope 11-10 in the half's first seven minutes and was within 12. With 8:33 left to go in the game a Kelsey Adamski lay up cut Hope's lead to four. That was the closest the Hornets would come to the Dutch before they finally lost by nine. The nine point margin is the third closest game Hope has been involved in this year, so there are a lot of positives for Kalamazoo to take from the game.

Kelsey Adamski found herself in double figures for the third straight game with 15 points. She's scored a combined 45 points over that stretch. She also added three rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks. Emily Kozal was phenomenal again off the bench with a team and career high 16 points. Querubin Dubois and Claire Slaughter were both effective off the bench as well with a combined 12 points, so Kalamazoo's bench continues to prove itself one of the strongest in the MIAA. Perri Nicholson led the team on the glass as usual with eight boards. The Hornets scored ten more points than the average Dutch opponent this season.

Kalamazoo may have had its five game win-streak broken, but it gave Hope a very tough game and proved it can hang with any team in the country. The Hornets will look to get back to their winning ways Wednesday, Jan. 14 at Albion.
