RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Kalamazoo College women's basketball team got the 2016-17 season started Tuesday evening as the Hornets traveled to Dominican University for a non-conference matchup, but the Stars got the best of Kalamazoo, coming away with a 70-58 win.

After falling behind 17-9 at the 2:32 mark of the first quarter, Kalamazoo's defense buckled down and the offense went on a 10-0 run giving the Hornets their first lead of the game early in the second quarter.

Dominican regained the lead and extended its lead to 31-26 with 2:21 to play in the first half but another run from Kalamazoo, this time a 7-0 run, propelled the Hornets to a 33-31 lead at the break.

Despite a strong effort in the second half, Dominican regained the lead over Kalamazoo midway through the third quarter and steadily added to it over the final 15 minutes. The Stars' stingy defense limited Kalamazoo to 21.2 percent shooting from the floor in the second half, but the Hornets did their part on the defensive end as well, holding Dominican to 9-of-26 shooting in the second half.

Danielle Simon led the way offensively for Kalamazoo, recording 18 points on 6-for-14 shooting. She also corralled six rebounds.

Mackenzie Norman and Libby Munoz each ended their night with nine points.

Kalamazoo will look to bounce back on Nov. 26 when the Hornets travel to Rochester College for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
