ANGOLA, Ind. – Facing the first place Trine University Thunder in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play Saturday afternoon, the Kalamazoo College women's basketball team looked up to the task in the early going, but the Thunder proved too much down the stretch. Trine defeated Kalamazoo, 79-48.

Paced by six points from Grace Smith in the first quarter the Hornets jumped out to a 17-8 lead after ten minutes. With the Hornets still leading by three with 2:22 to play in the second quarter, Trine closed the half on an 8-0 run and held a 31-26 lead at the break.

The teams traded baskets for much of the third quarter and Kalamazoo was down by just six at the 2:06 mark of the third, but another 8-0 run to close out the quarter created a deficit too large for the Hornets to overcome down the stretch.

Smith led the Hornets in scoring ending the day with 11 points. Danielle Simon dropped 10 points while bringing in eight rebounds and recording four assists.

Libby Munoz and Emily Kozal each ended the afternoon with nine points apiece.

The Hornets shot 41.7 percent from downtown.

The Hornets begin the final week of the season this Wednesday when they welcome Olivet to Anderson Athletic Center for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
