Women's Basketball Wins in Overtime at Olivet

OLIVET, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College women's basketball team defeated Olivet 70-68 in overtime Wednesday night to improve to 2-4 in MIAA play. The Hornets are now 2-0 in overtime games this season.

Kalamazoo led the entire first half and took a 28-19 lead into the break. 

Olivet outscored Kalamazoo 14-11 in the third quarter, but the Hornets still led by six (39-33) heading into the final quarter.

Kalamazoo pulled ahead by 13 (48-35) with 6:50 left in regulation before Olivet began chipping away and eventually tying the score at 56-56 with 48 seconds left. Kaytlyn Tidey's free throws put the Hornets back on top with 16 seconds left, but an Olivet bucket with five seconds left evened the score again. Kalamazoo's game-winning shot attempt at the buzzer was blocked sending the game to overtime.

Georgie Andrews' free throws put Kalamazoo up first in overtime, but Olivet tied it again (65-65) with 2:21 remaining. Kalamazoo regained the lead only to see Olivet tie it again with 14 seconds left. Following a Kalamazoo timeout, Tidey made a layup with five seconds left to put the Hornets on top 70-68. Olivet's final shot attempt was off the mark.

Kalamazoo shot 37.5 percent overall compared to 35.9 percent by Olivet. Neither team shot well from 3-point range, but Kalamazoo made 19-of-23 free throws compared to 16-of-26 for Olivet. Kalamazoo held a 43-42 edge in rebounds.

Kaytlyn Tidey led the Hornets with 19 points. Isabelle Clark scored 18 points with seven rebounds.

Mya Gough scored 11 points with seven rebounds. 

Georgie Andrews finished with nine points, nine rebounds, and five assists. Sierra Fraser also scored nine points with seven rebounds.

Kalamazoo returns home to face Calvin on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 3 p.m.
