Laila Vincent of the Kalamazoo College women's basketball team was named the SAAC Women's Hornet of the Week on Wednesday (Jan. 4).
The women's basketball team competed in one game this past week by traveling north to take on Grace Christian in non-conference action. After a hard-fought contest, the Hornets ultimately fell to the Tigers 89-73. The 73 points were the most scored by Kalamazoo this season and also the most in a game without overtime since Feb. 1, 2017, when the Hornets scored 78 against Alma. Kalamazoo also scored 80 in an overtime win last season against Camulet College on Nov. 27, 2021.
Vincent was a big part of this offensive outburst by having a career day against Grace Christian. She scored a career-high 32 points on 10-23 shooting, including one made three-point shot and going 11-13 from the free throw line. Vincent also secured her eighth career double-double by grabbing 15 rebounds, with nine coming on the defensive end and another six offensively. Playing a team-high 34 minutes, she also contributed three blocks, a steal, and an assist to her stat line.
In five games this season, Vincent is averaging 14.2 points, 7.6 rebounds, 2.0 steals, 1.4 blocks, and an assist per game. Coming off last season, where Vincent was the leading scorer as a first-year player, she is averaging 11.9 points and 7.7 rebounds per game in 31 career games. Along with her eight career double-doubles and career-high 32 points, Vincent's highest rebounding total was 16 against Albion on Feb. 5, 2022.
Kalamazoo will continue MIAA play this week with road games against Saint Mary's and Adrian on Wednesday (Jan. 4) and Saturday (Jan. 7).
