KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College women's lacrosse team was recognized today by the league as three Hornets were named to the All-MIAA team and Hannah Heeren was named Rookie of the Year.

"Rachel, Rose, Hannah, and Hannah are very deserving of this recognition," Head Coach Jess Smith said. "They worked extremely hard this season and made a huge impact within the MIAA. They always put the team's accomplishments ahead of their own, and the way they work together on the field with their teammates allowed our team to find a new level of success this spring."

Rachel Madar, a midfielder from DeWitt, Mich., pulled out all the stops for her senior season with the Hornets to earn her third All-MIAA First Team honor. Madar led Kalamazoo and was second in the MIAA with 64 goals scored off 127 shots for an impressive 50.4 percent shot accuracy. Madar also led the league and all of NCAA Division III in draw controls won with a career-high 146. She smashed her previous single-game school record in goals scored when she came up with ten against Trine on April 14.

"Rachel's efforts throughout her career on the draw have led to her becoming the new NCAA DIII career leader in draw controls per game, with an average of 9.74 over the course of her four years at Kalamazoo," Smith said. "She has been a two-year captain of our team, this is her third time being named first-team All-MIAA and she has had a phenomenal four-year career for the Hornets."

Heeren, a midfielder from Belmont, Mich. (Rockford HS) had a stellar freshman season with the Hornets and was named the MIAA's Rookie of the Year. She was in the starting lineup and saw action in all 14 of Kalamazoo's games this spring. Heeren was third on the team in goals scored with 37 and totaled 44 points. She had seven assists and won 20 draw controls. Heeren also boasted a 39.4 shot percentage, with 76 shots made on goal.

"Hannah Heeren is well-deserving of the Rookie of the Year award," Smith said. "She stepped into the starting lineup from the beginning of the season and elevated our play throughout the midfield. I look forward to seeing her take her game to new heights in her sophomore year!"

Rose Bogard, a junior from Ann Arbor, Mich., was named to the All-MIAA Second team. Bogard stepped up in several games this season to lead the Hornets in scoring. She set a new career-high when she scored eight goals at Hope on April 17. Bogard was second on the team overall in scoring with 39 successful goals off of 81 shots on goal. She led the Hornets with 46 ground ball pickups, caused 15 opponent turnovers and contributed 12 assists.

"Rose had a breakout season in 2021, hitting new career highs in goals and assists. Rose works tirelessly on the field and made a huge impact on both the offensive and defensive ends for the Hornets.  She will be a force to be reckoned with in her senior season next year!"

Senior Hannah Wolfe also earned All-MIAA Second Team honors. Wolfe had a successful senior year as part of the Hornet defense as she caused a team-high 23 opponent turnovers. She wrapped up the season with a total of three goals, 36 ground balls and 15 draw controls won. Wolfe and her fellow defenders caused a total of 132 turnovers for opposing teams. Wolfe was also named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week on April 19.

"Hannah Wolfe was our top defender, playing all of every game while also starting every soccer game during the same season and being named a first-team All-MIAA goalkeeper. She brings an unmatched work ethic to the team, and also brings a tremendous amount of joy, levity, and love for the game and her teammates."

This is Bogard and Wolfe's first times being named All-MIAA.

The Hornets wrapped up their season with a 6-8 overall record and went 3-4 in league play, averaging 14 goals per game.
