Women's Lacrosse Falls to Calvin

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College women's lacrosse team dropped to 1-1 in the MIAA with a 16-8 loss to Calvin University at MacKenzie Field Tuesday night.

Kalamazoo scored the first two goals of the game but trailed 5-2 at the end of the first quarter. The Hornets scored the first two goals of the second quarter as well to cut the deficit to 5-4. Calvin scored followed by Kalamazoo making it a 6-5 game with 5:22 left in the half. Calvin scored twice in the final four minutes to make it 8-5 heading into halftime.

The Knights scored three goals in the first five minutes of the third to extend their lead to 11-5. A Kalamazoo goal made it 11-6 before Calvin scored three more to make it 14-6. Kalamazoo scored with two seconds left in the quarter making it 14-7 heading into the fourth. Calvin pulled ahead 16-7 with 8:56 left in regulation. The Hornets scored the final goal with 2:13 remaining making it a 16-8 final.

Calvin outshot Kalamazoo 31-26 overall, 26-20 on goal. Kalamazoo won 16 of the 27 draws. The Knights held a 23-16 advantage in ground balls.

Hannah Heeren led the Hornets with five goals, eight draw controls, six ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Abbie Caza scored twice. Ella Spooner also scored.

Eden Schnurstein, Sophie Hartl and Jordan Doyle were credited with assists. Hartl also had five draw controls and three ground balls. Emma Curcuru had four ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Jordan Flink made 10 saves in goal.

Kalamazoo's next game is at Trine on Friday, April 14, at 7 p.m.
