Hannah Heeren and Ella Spooner's MIAA Defensive and Offensive Players of the Week graphic.

Hannah Heeren and Ella Spooner of the Kalamazoo College women's lacrosse team were selected as the MIAA Women's Lacrosse Players of the Week on Monday (Feb. 26). Heeren grabbed a Defensive Player of the Week selection, while Spooner was selected as the Offensive Player of the Week. This is the third time in Heeren's career that she has been chosen as a Defensive Player of the Week, and this is the second Player of the Week honor for Spooner, with the first one being on the defensive side.

The Hornets began their season with a road game at Indiana Tech on Feb. 21 before coming to Kalamazoo for the home opener on Feb. 24. Kalamazoo dropped the first game 17-15 to the Warriors and then bounced back for a 13-11 win over the Polar Bears.

Heeren got her senior off to a hot start with 24 draw controls, 15 ground balls, and 11 caused turnovers in two games for the Hornets defensively. She was the team's second-leading scorer with nine points on seven goals and two assists. The 14 draw controls against Ohio Northern and the eight caused turnovers at Indiana Tech were career-highs, while the 10 ground balls at Indiana Tech tied a career-high. Heeren had four goals at the Warriors and then three goals and two assists against the Polar Bears. In 50 games, Heeren has scored 173 goals and dished out 38 assists for 211 points while also collecting 237 draw controls, 171 ground balls, and 91 caused turnovers. She is second in program history for career goals, points, and draw controls, third in assists, and ninth in games played.

Spooner followed up her successful first season as a collegiate lacrosse player with 12 goals and two assists for 14 points in two games last week. She also contributed six draw controls, five ground balls, and four caused turnovers. Spooner scored six goals in both games, tying a career-high in both instances. She had her more active game defensively at Indiana Tech with five draw controls, four ground balls, and three caused turnovers. In her first 18 collegiate games, Spooner has scored 67 goals with 12 assists for 79 points to go along with 70 draw controls, 31 ground balls, and 22 caused turnovers. That makes her seventh in goals, eighth in points, and ninth in draw controls in program history.

The Hornets will continue their season with another home game against UW-Eau Claire on Saturday (Mar. 2).
