A strong, first half start and effort by the Kalamazoo College women's soccer team were spoiled by visiting Adrian on Wednesday, as the Bulldogs won a competitive Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association contest in overtime, 2-1.

Adrian's Erin Weide scored in the 100th minute on a breakaway down the center of the field and slid a rolling ball into the net for the win.

Kalamazoo had a strong start to the overtime frame, winning a corner and putting two of three shots on goal, but could not get one into the net.

"We definitely came out ready to play," said head coach Bryan Goyings. "We were up 1-0 at halftime and I felt we dominated the first half.

"Our goal is to play short corners and draw people out," Goyings said. "We've been good in overtime so far this year, so I liked our depth and our chances."

Kalamazoo took the lead on a first half goal by senior Jackie Short that was assisted by Verbeek in the 12th minute. Adrian tied it late in the second on a goal by Weide in the 74th minute on an assist from Lauren Cozzi.

The Bulldogs' Ellery Karsten assisted the winning goal.

The Hornets got a strong effort out of freshman keeper Lucy Mailing, who collected six saves on 15 shots faced. Short and Verbeek each put two shots on target for K.

"I thought our back line defended pretty well," added Goyings.

Weide put four of her five shots on goal for the Bulldogs.

Kalamazoo falls to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in MIAA play, while Adrian improves to 4-1-1 overall and 1-1-1 in league play.

The Hornets are back in action on the road against Olivet on Sept. 22 at Noon.
