KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Four members of the Kalamazoo College women's soccer team were selected on Thursday afternoon as All-MIAA performers for the 2019 season.
Libby Munoz was the lone Hornet named to the All-MIAA First Team as she was also honored as the league's Senior Sportswoman of the Year.
Munoz, a forward from Leland, Mich. (Leland HS), has now been picked as a First Team member for the third straight season. She has started all 54 games throughout those three years and has been Kalamazoo's leading goal scorer each time. Ahead of the MIAA Tournament, Munoz has found the back of the net nine times which are the fourth-most in the conference. Her 19 points are good for fifth-best in the league. Munoz was named MIAA Player of the Week once this season and has received the honor three times in her career. She is a three-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll member, as well.
"Libby has been an offensive forse on our team and in the league for the past four seasons," said Coach Bryan Goyings. "She really shouldered the attacking load again for us this year. Earning All-MIAA First Team accolades three years running is a tremendous accomplishment."
"It is a phenomenal honor to have Libby honored as the inagural Women's Soccer Senior Sportswoman of the Year. While familiar with Libby's contributions on the field, she also serves as a leader and coordinator of the Kalamazoo College research team for the coordination of the Kalamazoo County ID program. She is also a member of the Athletic Leadership Council, Student Advisory Board for Study Abroad and Study Away, and a President's Student Ambassador. On behalf of Kalamazoo College, I am grateful for Libby's contibutions to the institution, the women's soccer program, and excited for what the future holds for her."
Also receiving recognition from the MIAA were Maeve Novotny, Alexis Petty, and Hannah Wolfe as each player was selected to the All-MIAA Second Team. The trio played a pivotal role on the defensive end for a Kalamazoo team that had seven clean sheets this season.
Novotny and Petty, a duo of first-year defenders, started each game they played in for the Hornets during their freshmen campaigns. Novotny, from Kalamazoo, Mich. (Loy Norrix HS) played as the final line of defense for the Hornets in a season that the team held five MIAA opponents scoreless. Petty, also from Kalamazoo, Mich. (Otsego HS), took many of Kalamazoo's free-kicks this season. She tallied one assist while taking four shots and getting one on goal.
Wolfe, a goalie from West Bloomfield, Mich. (Bloomfield Hills HS), started in 14 games for the Hornets and allowed just 14 goals all season. Her 85 saves this season led the MIAA. The junior also held a .859 save percentage throughout the season which was the second-highest in the league. Her 0.93 goals-against average was the third-best around the league, as well.
"Hannah, Maeve, and Alexis each played a major role in strong team defending throughout the MIAA campaign," said Goyings. "Petty and Novotny provided an excellent center back tandem with their ball winning and individual defending. Wolfe was a consistent presence that had four shutouts and only gave up two goals in conference play."
The Hornets finished the regular season with a 6-7-3 record overall while earning the third seed in the MIAA Tournament following a 5-2-1 record in conference games. They will look to continue their season on Saturday, Nov. 2 when Calvin visits MacKenzie Field for the first round of the MIAA Tournament. The game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
