KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Destiny Garcia of the Kalamazoo College women's soccer team was named the MIAA Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday for her performance in last week's games.
Garcia, a freshman from Chicago, Ill. (DePaul Prep) led the team this past week with three goals scored over two games. On April 6 against Olivet, she had two key goals in Kalamazoo's 4-0 victory over the Comets. With a 1-0 lead, Garcia scored a goal early in the second half to put the Hornets up 2-0, followed up quickly by a successful penalty kick to the back of the net in the 53rd minute. On April 9, she scored the lone goal of the game in a 1-0 win against Trine. She found the back of the net at the start of the second half off an assist by Joy Hunziker.
Garcia leads the team in goals scored with five on the season.
"This is a well-deserved honor for Destiny's contributions last week," Head Coach Bryan Goyings said. "Destiny is a dynamic attacking player that has been able to find timely goals and has played a key role in our team's success so far this season. We have had some notable contributions from our first-year players and I think Destiny is a fine representative of how a number of these players have stepped up and supported the core of returning players, which has led to a number of positive results so far this season."
The Hornets return to action on Thursday, April 15 when they host Calvin for a 4 p.m. game.
