Women's Soccer Shuts Out Wittenberg

Lexi Nesbitt kicks the soccer ball

Kalamazoo, Mich. – The Kalamazoo College women's soccer team posted its second shutout of the young season Friday night with a 2-0 victory over Wittenberg University at MacKenzie Field.

Destiny Garcia scored a goal and assisted on another for the Hornets, while Lexi Nesbitt had six saves.

Garcia showed plenty of grit after getting kicked by a Wittenberg player with four minutes remaining in the first half. Despite being forced to leave the game, she bounced back to start the second half and promptly deposited a beautiful lead pass from Sophia Timm-Blow past a sprawling Wittenberg keeper. Not even two minutes had elapsed in the half before K had taken the lead for good.

Later, in the 80th minute, Garcia juked a Wittenburg defender on the right sideline and delivered a picture-perfect pass to Savera Rajendra-Nicolucci, who calmly knocked it in from just inside the penalty area to close out the scoring.

"Wittenberg was physical, hardworking, organized, and provided an excellent challenge," said K head coach Bryan Goyings. "Sophia provided a superb diagonal pass to set up the first goal, and Destiny's individual effort to set up Savera's goal was extraordinary. It was great to see Savera rewarded for her efforts throughout the game."

The Hornets (2-0) will face a quick turnaround, hosting DePauw at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
